‘Those Lessons Helped Me Stay Strong’ – How His Mother’s Strength Guided Samet Agdeve To Kickboxing Gold

Heavyweight kickboxer Samet Agdeve celebrates after defeating Roman Kryklia at ONE Fight Night 37

When Samet “The King” Agdeve stood in the center of the ring as the inaugural ONE Heavyweight Kickboxing World Champion, he had finally arrived at the exact destination he had spent years pursuing.

The undefeated Turkish star now owns a perfect 18-0 professional record and sits comfortably at the absolute pinnacle of his sport. Yet, one person remains at the true center of his story — his mother.

On Friday, June 19, Agdeve will defend his coveted belt against two-sport, two-division ONE World Champion Roman Kryklia in the co-main event of The Inner Circle 19. The highly anticipated sequel streams live in Asia primetime via live.onefc.com from Bangkok’s historic Lumpinee Stadium.

The rematch represents another massive opportunity for the 22-year-old to build on the defining victory of his career. Yet, every achievement he has collected along the way traces directly back to the lessons he learned from his mother, long before World Championship gold ever entered the picture.

He said:

“I was absolutely thinking about my mother even while I was standing in the ring.

“The moment I became World Champion, one of the first people who came to my mind was her. I dedicated that victory and the World Title to my mother because she played a huge role in shaping the person I am today. It was an emotional moment, and sharing that achievement with her meant more to me than any belt or trophy.”

The Lessons That Shaped A World Champion

Prior to reaching the summit of the striking world, Agdeve was growing up in Izmir, Türkiye, in a hardworking household. His father worked in construction while his mother managed the home, raising three boys while navigating immense challenges that would leave a lasting mark on the future king.

Among the most difficult obstacles was his mother’s battle with cancer. Watching her fight through the illness at a young age forced Agdeve to mature much earlier than his peers, teaching him foundational lessons that would later help him navigate his own professional struggles.

“The King” recalled:

“It was a very difficult period in my life. Watching my mother battle cancer at such a young age taught me patience, resilience, and responsibility.

“It forced me to grow up earlier than most people. Those experiences shaped me not only as a fighter, but also as a man. They taught me how to stay strong during hard times and never give up when life becomes difficult.”

Those values stayed with him as he developed into one of Türkiye’s most promising amateur prospects. Before turning 19, Agdeve had already captured gold at both the WAKO Junior European Championships and WAKO Junior World Championships, establishing himself as a rising talent with global ambitions.

But talent alone would not be enough to reach the elite level he envisioned. In pursuit of greater opportunities, Agdeve made a life-changing decision and relocated alone to Germany.

The transition proved far more difficult than any sanctioned fight. There were grueling periods when he slept on the streets and went hungry, working physically taxing construction jobs and security shifts just to survive while keeping his training on track.

Through every hardship, his mother’s wisdom never left his side.

The AllStars Germany representative said:

“The most important lessons I learned from my mother were patience and gratitude.

“No matter how difficult life became, she taught me to be thankful for what I had instead of focusing on what I lacked. Those lessons helped me stay strong during tough times, keep moving forward, and never lose faith in the process.”

The Promise He Never Forgot

Slowly but surely, the immense sacrifices began to pay off. Agdeve carried his success seamlessly into the professional ranks, compiling an unblemished record while building a reputation for explosive knockout power and relentless forward pressure.

His major breakthrough arrived in September 2025 when he defeated three separate opponents in a single night to win the SENSHI Heavyweight Grand Prix, announcing himself to the world as a terrifying heavyweight threat.

That performance ultimately paved the way for his arrival in the world’s largest martial arts organization. But years before Agdeve became a World Champion, his mother left him with a prophetic message that would anchor him through every storm.

He recalled her saying:

“When you rise, you’ll tell these stories.”

At the time, he was still years away from the biggest accomplishments of his career, but he never forgot those words.

In his very first appearance on ONE’s global stage, matchmakers paired Agdeve against Kryklia — a dominant double-champ who had long established an aura of invincibility.

Few expected the Turkish challenger to prevail at ONE Fight Night 37. Five rounds later, however, he had shocked the combat sports world, utilizing relentless boxing and calf kicks to claim a unanimous decision and the inaugural crown.

The achievement represented more than the realization of a lifelong dream. It was also the fulfillment of the lessons and values that had guided him through every hardship along the way.

Agdeve said:

“Those words stayed with me because we come from a culture that values loyalty, gratitude, and family above everything else.

“No amount of money or success can ever come before family. My mother taught me to never forget where I came from and to always appreciate the people who stood by me during the hardest times. That’s why her words have stayed with me throughout my journey.”

Today, Agdeve stands proudly atop the heavyweight kickboxing world as he prepares for his defining rematch against Kryklia at The Inner Circle 19.

While the World Title remains his greatest professional milestone, sharing the reward with his family is what truly validates the journey.

“The King” concluded:

“She feels very happy and proud.

“Seeing her smile and knowing that she is proud of what I have achieved means more to me than any title or accomplishment. After everything she went through and everything our family experienced, being able to make her proud is one of the greatest rewards of my journey.”
