Sam-A Gaiyanghadao Claims Another World Title With Crushing KO

Muay Thai legend Sam-A Gaiyanghadao entered the record books on Friday, 18 May.

The Singapore-based Thai added to his world title collection by capturing the ONE Super Series Muay Thai Flyweight World Championship after a phenomenal performance – knocking out The Netherlands’ Sergio “Samurai” Wielzen in round four.

Wielzen began the first round as the aggressor in the Singapore Indoor Stadium, opening up with hard hard leg kicks. Sam-A replied by finding his reach to unleash his lightning left roundhouse, which snapped against the torso of the Dutch-Surinamese striker.

However, “Samurai” kept the contest competitive, and looked dangerous when he applied pressure until he was tripped to the canvas.

Sam-A seemed to have his timing down to perfection in the second frame. He either caught or blocked kicks, and countered instantaneously. 

Wielzen was still in the match, but much of what he threw was nullified or quickly countered by the Muay Thai master.

The left kick was used to great effect at the start of the third, and began to find its mark more frequently.

It was also the first time fans saw Sam-A choose to engage in the clinch for any significant periods — and he was in as much control there as anywhere else. On the one occasion “Samurai” tried to wrestle back control of the bout, he was immediately dumped onto the canvas again.

The end approached as the match-up entered the championship rounds, and this is when the Thai legend moved up a gear. His snapping kicks now landed with a thud, and he started to mix punches and elbows into his combinations, which found their mark.

Sam-A also continued to have full control in the clinch, which was a position that Wielzen was willing to engage in one time too many. One tie-up was immediately met with a left elbow, which caused him to tumble to the floor.

Wielzen never fully recovered, as moments later he was stunned with a knee, an elbow, and another kick, which put him on wobbly legs. 

A straight left hand and upward elbow were then followed by a left and right elbow combination, and that put the Sityodtong Amsterdam product down for good at 2:47 of round four.

In addition to becoming the first-ever ONE Super Series World Champion in history, Sam-A improves his incredible record to 366-46-9.

Wielzen – who was a game competitor, but just not up to the same standard as one of the greatest Muay Thai exponents of all-time – drops to 46-19-2 (1 NC).
