Historic K-1 World Champion Wei Rui Signs With ONE Championship

One of China’s leading strikers has officially put pen to paper with ONE Championship.

Multiple-time K-1 World Champion Wei Rui, considered to be one of the top pound-for-pound kickboxers on the planet today, has signed with the world’s largest martial arts organization.

The 34-year-old said of the blockbuster signing:

“I have competed in many domestic and overseas events. Despite the success and recognition I have achieved in China, I am still looking for opportunities to compete with the best fighters on the best platform. ONE Championship is the best combat sports promotion. It’s the right platform for me.”

After developing his name in China’s sanda circuit and capturing a slew of provincial titles, Wei transitioned to kickboxing with the intention of testing his skills against the world’s greatest strikers.

The Henan native made his professional debut in 2013 and spent the first several years of his kickboxing career dominating the competition in Chinese organizations.

Wei’s crowning moment came in February 2017, as he won the K-1 World Grand Prix Lightweight Championship Tournament and claimed the Japanese promotion’s lightweight belt. In the process, he became China’s first K-1 World Champion in history.

Although he dropped the gold in March 2018, Wei hasn’t lost a match since that fateful night in Tokyo, Japan. In fact, he is riding a 20-bout winning streak.

All of that led the Chinese superstar – who owns victories over the likes of highly regarded kickboxers Wang Pengfei, Kongnapa Weerasakreck, and Daizo Sasaki – to ONE Championship.

Wei is expected to compete in ONE Championship’s bantamweight kickboxing division, which is currently ruled by two-sport king Jonathan “The General” Haggerty.

A date hasn’t been set for Wei’s promotional debut, but fans should expect to see him compete in the months to come.
