Shoya Ishiguro Vs. Ruan Alvarenga Featherweight Submission Grappling Match Added To ONE Fight Night 48
A high-level featherweight submission grappling contest has been added to ONE Fight Night 48: Erdogan vs. Elliott on Prime Video, as Japanese standout Shoya Ishiguro will meet Brazilian ace Ruan Alvarenga.
The 10-minute showdown will broadcast live in U.S. primetime on Friday, October 2, from Bangkok’s iconic Lumpinee Stadium.
Ishiguro returns to the ONE Championship ring looking to build on an accomplished run that has already produced four victories under the promotion’s banner. The matchup will also mark Ishiguro’s first featherweight appearance in the organization after previously competing across flyweight and bantamweight.
The 29-year-old ARTA Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu representative has repeatedly shown that he can threaten opponents in several phases of the grappling game. Among Ishiguro’s four ONE victories are decision wins over fellow Japanese black belts Toshiyasu Sagae and Hiryu Niwa.
But Ishiguro has also demonstrated the ability to end contests before the judges become involved.
Against Brazilian veteran Bruno “Macaco” Azevedo at ONE Friday Fights 64, the Japanese black belt relentlessly hunted the legs before securing a tight inside heel hook at the 9:17 mark of their matchup.
He later added another submission to his ONE resume against Denny Sisti at ONE Friday Fights 115, forcing the American to tap to a neck crank at 6:20.
Those victories have complemented Ishiguro’s success outside the promotion. The Japanese standout captured silver at the 2025 IBJJF European Championship and followed that achievement with bronze at the IBJJF World Championship later that year, further establishing himself among his country’s leading BJJ competitors.
Standing across from him will be an opponent who made a terrific first impression in his own ONE Championship debut.
Alvarenga entered the world’s largest martial arts organization at ONE Fight Night 46 this past August and defeated two-time IBJJF World Champion Meyram Maquine Alves by unanimous decision in featherweight submission grappling.
The result marked the Brazilian’s second victory over Maquine after he had previously edged his compatriot by referee’s decision at BJJ Stars 17 in 2025.
Alvarenga now carries a 21-6 professional record into his sophomore promotional appearance.
The 28-year-old Pantera Negra Brazilian Jiu Jitsu representative also possesses elite grappling lineage. He is the son of respected instructor Iran Brasileiro Alvarenga, who helped develop BJJ icon Marcelo Garcia, and later sharpened his own craft while training directly under Garcia in New York City.
Alvarenga’s strongest work often comes from dominant top positions, where his wrestling, positional pressure, and ability to attack the back can suffocate opponents. Against Maquine, however, Alvarenga showed he can also win through sustained aggression and tactical discipline, weathering dangerous leg-lock attacks before taking control of key scrambles and earning the judges’ nod.
That combination creates an intriguing stylistic battle against Ishiguro, whose own submission threats extend from leg entanglements to upper-body attacks.
When the two accomplished black belts collide on October 2, Ishiguro will look to add a fifth ONE victory to his resume, while Alvarenga aims to build on the momentum of his successful promotional debut and further establish himself in ONE’s featherweight submission grappling ranks.
