ONE Friday Fights 139 Results: Rustam Yunusov Extends Pristine Slate To 16-0 Against Tough Khunponnoi
The featured flyweight Muay Thai war at ONE Friday Fights 139 between Rustam “Tomahawk” Yunusov and Khunponnoi Sor Sommai was fireworks throughout. After nine ultra-competitive minutes, it was the former who got his hand raised.
Yunusov moved to a perfect 16-0 in his career via unanimous decision after a fierce display against the game Thai warrior, live in Asia primetime on Friday, January 23, inside Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
After a cautious opening minute, Khunponnoi fired a middle kick that Yunusov caught and countered with a punch, only for the Thai to respond while balanced on one leg.
The tempo soon lifted as both traded low kicks, with the undefeated Russian beginning to take initiative behind sharp combinations.
A missed spinning back elbow didn’t slow him, as Yunusov closed the round with a clean left hand and a perfectly timed elbow. The One Chance and Tomahawk Kamilov Team standout then continued where he had left off in the second frame.
He dominated the clinch with knees and elbows, opening a cut just above Khunponnoi’s right eye. Bloodied but determined, the Thai pushed forward, but the 19-year-old Yunusov’s surgical precision was too much.
Round three provided a similar plot. The Russian’s forward pressure kept piling more misery on the Sor Sommai warrior. Credit where it’s due, though, Khunponnoi battled on with sharp combinations.
Two counter elbows late in the final canto from Yunusov, however, all but sealed his fate. All three judges at ringside awarded the Russian the victory, who also moved to 7-0 in ONE Friday Fights.
