Legends will collide when Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu royalty Marcelo Garcia faces off with Australian innovator Lachlan Giles in a when lightweight submission grappling battle at ONE Fight Night 38 on Prime Video.

Broadcasting live in U.S. primetime on Friday, December 5, from Bangkok, Thailand, this highly anticipated clash will showcase pure grappling artistry at its absolute highest level.

The name Marcelo Garcia is synonymous with submission grappling greatness. The Brazilian icon captured four ADCC World Championships and five IBJJF World Titles with an unmatched finishing instinct, cementing his status as one of the greatest pound-for-pound competitors of all time.

His technical innovations changed the sport forever. The butterfly guard, arm-drag back-takes, and guillotine chokes that define modern grappling – Garcia perfected them all.

The 42-year-old’s journey back to the mats is pure inspiration. After stepping away in 2011 for family, Garcia faced stomach cancer in 2023. Following a brutal year of chemotherapy, he beat cancer and returned to competition.

His emotional comeback after a 14-year hiatus came at ONE 170 in January, when he took on Japanese legend Masakazu “Ashikan-Judan” Imanari.

Garcia dominated from the opening bell, securing top control and suffocating Imanari with relentless pressure. His technique was flawless, his control, absolute.

The BJJ pioneer methodically broke down Imanari’s guard, passed with surgical precision, then flowed into a textbook north-south choke to secure the tap.

Now, Garcia looks to continue inspiring the martial arts world and add another chapter to his storied legacy.

But “Marcelinho” must overcome another leg-lock master who has made a career out of toppling giants.

Giles earned his “Giant Killer” nickname at the 2019 ADCC World Championships. Competing in the absolute division as a 77-kilogram athlete, the Australian shocked the world by submitting heavyweights Kaynan Duarte, Patrick Gaudio, and Mahamed Aly – all via his signature inside heel hook.

His bronze medal finish marked the first time a 77-kilogram competitor reached the absolute podium since 2007, proving technical mastery is enough to overcome massive size differences.

The Absolute MMA head coach built his reputation on devastating heel hooks, weaponizing the K-Guard position to create one of the sport’s most feared leg entanglement systems.

Beyond competition, Giles put Australia on the global BJJ map. The 39-year-old awarded fellow Australian star Craig Jones his black belt in 2016 and helped forge the region’s new breed of elite grapplers.

His ONE Championship debut against Garcia represents a golden opportunity – a chance to defeat the greatest of all time on the world’s biggest stage.

The stylistic clash is captivating. Garcia’s fundamentally sound positional dominance meets Giles’ cutting-edge guard retention. Old school submissions from top control versus modern leg attacks from below. Both embrace risk in pursuit of the tap.

On December 5, Bangkok will witness which style reigns supreme.
