‘I’ll Break Her Down’ – Yu Yau Pui Vows Redemption Against Supergirl At ONE Fight Night 41
Yu Yau Pui is ready to prove her best days in ONE Championship are yet to come.
The 33-year-old from Hong Kong will look to return to her winning ways when she faces Thai sensation Anna “Supergirl” Jaroonsak in a three-round atomweight Muay Thai battle at ONE Fight Night 41 on Prime Video, broadcasting live in U.S. primetime on Friday, March 13, from the historic Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
The southpaw striker brings a 6-2 promotional record into this crucial showdown.
Yu got off to a hot start in the world’s largest martial arts organization, claiming five consecutive victories at ONE Friday Fights. Each performance demonstrated the finishing ability and heart she has become known for.
Now coming off back-to-back losses against Amy Pirnie and Martyna Dominczak, the aggressive striker views those setbacks as a vital learning experience.
The 33-year-old revealed:
“I was very excited when I got the call from ONE Championship. I can’t wait to showcase how much I have improved this time. I’m a little bit nervous. I’ve put in a lot of effort, and I hope I can really do my best inside the ring.”
The two consecutive defeats forced Yu to analyze what went wrong, and she has now made crucial adjustments to her approach, particularly focusing on defense.
The Hong Kong resident candidly reflected on the mistakes that led to her recent struggles and the changes she’s implemented during her most recent training camp.
The southpaw striker explained:
“Maybe I was rushing too much and overlooked a lot of things. For example, I didn’t protect myself properly. That’s why I got knocked out [against Amy Pirnie].
“[I realized that] besides my punches, I need to improve my other weapons, like my kicks, to become a more multi-dimensional fighter instead of relying only on my punches. I hope this time I can truly show how much my style has improved.”
The heartbreaking defeats have been particularly difficult for Yu, as she watched other fighters who entered ONE the same year as her achieve incredible success in the promotion. Those comparisons have motivated her to work harder and claim her position among the division’s top stars.
The KF 1 representative shared:
“I think when I look back at the fighters that ONE Championship signed in the same year, 2023, most of them have achieved a lot.
“For example, Nabil [Anane], Rambolek [Chor Ajalaboon], and Phetjeeja — they have already achieved so much. They have their belts, and they have their title fights. For me, I once believed I had the chance, but I fell twice. This time, I really hope that I can go back to the winning column.”
Yu Targets Supergirl’s Reach With Superior Endurance
Anna Jaroonsak presents a formidable challenge to Yu Yau Pui’s return to form. The young Thai star holds a 40-7 professional striking record — with three victories in ONE — and is known for her spear-like knees and explosive hands.
Having studied her opponent extensively during her preparation, Yu recognizes the physical advantages Supergirl brings to their atomweight matchup.
The southpaw explained:
“I know that she’s a very tough fighter. I believe she has a signature move — her knees. She’s strong, and she has good hands too.
“I think she may be taller than me, and her reach is longer. That’s why she can throw very long-distance knee strikes. So, I believe her advantage is her length.”
Despite acknowledging Supergirl’s strengths, Yu is confident her superior conditioning will be the difference-maker in their bout.
The 33-year-old plans to weather the early storm and capitalize when opportunities present themselves.
The experienced star, an avid reader of psychology books, concluded:
“I believe my endurance will be better than hers, so I’ll be waiting to see if there’s a loophole. When the time is right, I’ll get inside and break her down.
“I think every fighter in every fight wants to win by knockout. With the 4-ounce gloves, you have to be careful every single moment. Of course, I’m looking for a knockout, but I’ll just do my best inside the ring.”
