About Zhang Lipeng
Zhang Lipeng is one of the most prolific MMA fighters to come out of the martial arts hotbed of China.
“The Warrior” was born in Inner Mongolia, and he was a gifted all-around athlete long before he ever threw a punch. At 14, he competed in track and field as a multi-discipline specialist, excelling in shot put, discus, and javelin. That athletic promise carried him to the Xi’an Institute of Physical Education at 16, where he began training sanda. However, the path was far from smooth. After two years, he failed to make the grade and was cast out by his coach.
Rather than accept defeat, Zhang doubled down on his dream. Determined to make it in combat sports, he moved to Beijing and committed fully to mixed martial arts instead of settling for a traditional job. He began his training there in 2008 and turned professional the following year.
Zhang quickly established himself on the local circuit and became one of the first crossover MMA stars in China. But the early hype faded when he dropped a string of fights, and many wrote him off, assuming he wasn’t destined for greatness.
He had other ideas. After a brief stint competing in North America, Zhang returned to Asia in 2015 and went on a rampage through the competition in China. Reeling off a remarkable 16-fight winning streak, he compiled a 22-2-1 record with an incredible 18 finishes and captured multiple titles over that period. Along the way, he reclaimed his status as one of the premier Chinese MMA fighters on the scene.
It was simply a matter of time before an opportunity to compete in ONE Championship came along for the ultra-talented lightweight.
Zhang signed with the world’s largest martial arts organization in 2021, and he instantly repaid the promotion’s good faith with an impressive unanimous decision win over former ONE Lightweight MMA World Champion Eduard Folayang.
The Chinese star would continue to thrill, eventually securing a trio of first-round knockouts over the likes of Kyrgyz powerhouse Ruslan Emilbek Uulu, former ONE World Title challenger Timofey Nastyukhin, and former Pancrase Champion Hiroyuki Tetsuka.
Now, having already overcome rejection, doubt, and the brink of obscurity to rebuild himself into an elite contender, Zhang has his sights set firmly on the ultimate prize: a ONE World Title.
