About Edgar Tabares
WBC Muay Thai International Champion Edgar Tabares began his martial arts journey when he was 9 years old. The Mexican took up taekwondo to protect himself from schoolyard bullies. However, just after a few years of training, Tabares’ family faced financial hardship and he could no longer attend classes.
Luckily for the young Mexican, he had an uncle who was a Muay Thai coach. Tabares started training in boxing and kickboxing with his uncle, and then he transitioned to Muay Thai. The teenager took a particular liking to Thailand’s national sport, and he decided he wanted to become a professional competitor. His mother, however, didn’t initially support his decision.
Eventually, Tabares made a name for himself in Mexico’s Muay Thai scene. And in July 2022, he made history when he became the country’s first athlete to capture a WBC Muay Thai International Title. That also helped him win his mother’s support.
In 2023, Tabares officially signed with ONE Championship and on May 5, he will challenge ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Rodtang Jitmuangnon for the gold in his promotional debut at ONE Fight Night 10.
