About Amanda Alequin
Amanda “Tubby” Alequin is an Ecuadorian-American competing in ONE Championship’s strawweight submission grappling division, and she happens to be one of the most decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts in the world.
Alequin, however, didn’t discover the sport until later on in life. She – along with her two older sisters and younger brother – was raised in Brooklyn, New York, by immigrant parents who owned a neighborhood business.
Because all six of the family members lived in a small apartment, conflict couldn’t be avoided, and “Tubby” often found herself wrestling and boxing with her siblings.
These early instances sparked Alequin’s interest in martial arts, so when her family moved their business to Florida and she discovered a BJJ school behind their store, she joined and was instantly hooked.
Alequin began to build her resume competing on the U.S. grappling scene before traveling the world to face the very best in her weight category. Having beaten the best on offer, Alequin went on to win gold at multiple events, topped by the 2019 IBJJF No-Gi World Championship.
“Tubby” now wants to capture another prestigious grappling accolade, this time on the global stage of martial arts.
