Armen Petrosyan: ‘Giorgio Is Simply Invincible’

ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix Champion Giorgio Petrosyan At ONE CENTURY PART II

Nobody knows Giorgio “The Doctor” Petrosyan better than his brother and fellow ONE Super Series star, Armen Petrosyan.

Armen has been right beside his older sibling every day at Team Petrosyan in Milan, Italy, where “The Doctor” has been training for his featherweight kickboxing tussle against Georgian striker Davit Kiria at ONE: FISTS OF FURY, this Friday, 26 February.

After seeing how hard Petrosyan has prepared for his rematch with Kiria, the younger brother is excited to witness the action at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

“The training camp has proceeded really well. We are getting closer to the fight. Giorgio is in really good shape. We can’t wait,” Armen says.

Giorgio is the #1-ranked contender in ONE’s stacked featherweight kickboxing division, which has received a massive influx of the greatest strikers on the planet over the past year.

“The Doctor’s” top spot — along with his reputation as the greatest kickboxer of all time — means there is a colossal target on his back, with all of his peers gunning for their chance to face him.

Still, Armen has faith in Giorgio’s ability to defeat anybody he goes up against.

This year, all the best 70-kilogram athletes in the world are on ONE Championship’s roster,” the younger Petrosyan says.

Sure, everyone wants to fight [Giorgio] because he is the best, but we are ready for anyone and we will face every opponent one at a time.

“Giorgio just has to keep training hard, as he always does, thinking about one opponent at a time. Everyone wants to fight Giorgio because he is still the king of the division and the man to beat.”

“The Doctor” has achieved incredible success in kickboxing, with his last loss coming in 2013 and his overall record sitting at an astounding 103-2-2 (2 NC).

But according to his younger brother, the formula for that success simply comes from dedication and an unfaltering mindset.

“There is no secret weapon. He is at the top in every aspect of the game: boxing, kicks, and knees,” Armen says.

“He is a stone-cold fighter and knows exactly what he has to do to win every match. He is simply invincible.

Giorgio is simply number one. He has always proved it inside the ring, winning all the big fights and tournaments he has taken part in over the years. There is no other athlete in the game who has done better than him.”

Despite Giorgio’s status as a living legend of the sport, he remains humble and does not believe his legacy is cemented just yet.

The former refugee – who landed in Italy after escaping war in his native Armenia – has already done so much in kickboxing, but there is more that he wants to achieve.

Petrosyan won the ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix in 2019, and his eyes are now set on the ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Championship belt.

Meanwhile, Kiria knows that he can leapfrog many of the other contenders if he hands Giorgio a rare defeat. Nevertheless, Armen believes his older sibling will take the victory – and the next step toward the ultimate prize.

“Giorgio has to fight how he knows. He has to be 100 percent focused in the ring, and the win will be a natural consequence,” Armen says.

“He is physically and mentally ready for the fight, so we will see who the winner will be.”
